Surprised? The Director of Public Affairs of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Mr Tony Ojobo, said almost half of MTN subscribers switched to other networks during the recently introduced Mobile Number Portability (MNP) scheme.

With the figures released by Mr Ojobo, MTN topped the losers table among an overall number of subscribers that switched service providers in the telecoms market with 49%; followed by Globacom with 23%; Airtel with 17%; while Etisalat came last on the losers’ table with 11%. REVEALED: Prophet Ajanaku Was A Cult Member

It was claimed that Prophet Ireti Ajanaku resurrected  but this may have been a false attempt to keep his memory alive by some of his church members.
photo
The Prophet, Tope Alabi estranged spiritual father has already been confirmed dead and the Oro traditional worshippers have conducted a funeral rite for the late pastor.
According to a report
Oro Worshippers held funeral rites for Prophet Ajanaku. The late founder and spiritual leader of the Christ Revival Victory Chapel International, Pastor Elijah Iretiola Ajanaku belonged to the Oro cult in his lifetime.
Residents of Ikola Odunsi, where Ajanaku lived before he breathed his last on Saturday evening at Gbongan in Osun State, were surprised early Tuesday morning when Oro masquerades went to town in funeral rites for the departed ‘Pastor’.
The funeral rites which began at about 12.30am ended between 3 and 4am.
The Oro worshippers chanted the name of Ajanaku throughout the night. The worshippers marched through the streets of Ikola Odunsi, Ikola Gbenaje, and landed at the deceased’s street, Folarin Williams Close.
They were chanting, “Ajanaku lo, o di gbere”, meaning “Ajanaku is gone forever, adieu”.
For those who knew him before he became a wealthy pastor, Ajanaku became wealthy suddenly about seven years ago.
Before then, those who knew him very well said he lived at Ikola Ilumo and Ikola Odunsi, two close communities in Agbado Oke-Odo LCDA. During this time, he was doing menial jobs to survive.
“He started as a bus conductor with one of the popular drivers plying the Ikola-Iyana Ipaja route in the area. Later, he ventured into tyre repairing which many know as vulcanising. For about a year, he was doing vulcanising job at one of the bus stops at Ikola Ilumo,” one of those who knew him then told our correspondent.
“When he realised that money was not coming in from his vulcanising job, he diversified into battery charging. He did it for sometime before he just disappeared for a while and the next thing I heard about him was that he had become a wealthy pastor,” another old friend told our correspondent.
Before he relocated to Lagos from his Gbongan hometown, he was reported to be well known for his  mysterious ways in the town. Some even believe he had some supernatural powers. In fact, as his name suggests, Ajanaku was from a well known family of masquerade worshippers in the ancient town.
“When he became a rich pastor, Ajanaku lived like a tin god. He always went around in a convoy of exotic cars and he reserved a bus for young ladies in their teens who always followed him around. You couldn’t talk to him while standing. You had to bow your head or kneel down outright.
“I remember when we did a job for him and it was time to collect money, I had to kneel down before him to collect my money. It was not only me. There were others who came before me and some waiting for their turn after me. All of us were on our knees,” an electrician who lives in Ikola Odunsi narrated to our correspondent.
Although he had many ladies at his beck and call, Ajanaku was legally married to a wife and they had two children: a boy and a girl.

Hausa & Yoruba Traders Clash Over Boko-Haram Killings

THERE was pandemonium at the Bodija market in Ibadan on Friday as Yoruba and Hausa traders clashed, resulting in the destruction of goods worth millions of naira.

No one could say categorically what triggered the clash, except what many of the traders regarded it as a built-up anger over the downturn in their economy since the killing of 14 Yoruba traders in Borno State on May 4 and June 28 this year, where they had gone to buy beans.

Since the killing of their colleagues (the second incident) on June 28, Yoruba traders have stopped travelling to the north-eastern state, where the specie of beans (Oloyin) loved by people in the South-West is usually found at cheaper price.

However, Hausa traders in Bodija market were said to have been receiving regular supply of the commodity from their kinsmen and had been selling same at exorbitant prices to traders willing to buy and re-sell.

This had resulted in a hike in the price of beans, which has risen to N550 per measure, against N280 for which it was sold before the Borno killing of the traders.

Pent up anger, however, boiled over on Friday afternoon while Muslim faithful were observing Jumaat in mosques, leading to the disruption of the peace of the entire market.

Different weapons like sticks, stones and iron rods were freely used, with the Yoruba traders chanting that they would no longer keep quiet over the agenda of the Hausa to take over commerce in the market.

One of the traders, Saidi Baoku, who spoke with Saturday Tribune, alleged that the Hausa traders in the market were trying to take food off their tables by killing their business.

He further insinuated that the killing of the traders in the market was masterminded by the Hausa traders to pave way for their control of the market, as the Yoruba traders would no longer be able to go to the North to buy foodstuffs.

He said that the over N40 million lost by the slain traders was not as painful as their lives that were brutally terminated.

“We have tried to be patient but we have seen that if we don’t fight for ourselves, these Hausa will continue to cheat us in our own land.

After all, the driver of the vehicle in which the 10 traders were was not killed. We want everybody and government to come to our aid and help so that we don’t die of hunger,” he stated.

Baoku also said that no one could say what triggered yesterday’s fight but said that the Yoruba traders just decided to join in the fight because it was for their cause.

While speaking on the development, the Chairman of Ibadan North Local Government, Hon. Idris Lapade, told Saturday Tribune that the market had been shut, saying that prompt intervention of men and officers of the Nigeria Police, officials of the Directorate of State Security and Operation Burst, led by the Area Commander in charge of Agodi Area Command, prevented the crisis from escalating beyond manageable level.

“We are trying to evacuate the Yoruba before asking the Hausa to leave, because they might be attacked if they move out at the same time. The market belongs to the local government; it is not anyone’s property. All we are trying to ensure is peace,” Lapade said.

He revealed that there was a security meeting two days before the incident where it was decided that the two parties should be invited, adding that leaders of the traders also held a meeting with the Commissioner of Police a few hours before the crisis, and were yet to get back to the market when the mayhem broke out.

He opined that the fight must have resulted from built-up tension.

The Public Relations Officer of the Bodija arm of the Ibadan Foodstuff Sellers Association, Mr Hakeem Emiola, also corroborated the chairman’s statement that no one knew how the Friday crisis started, saying that it was only God that had been helping the executive to contain the anger of the traders.

He noted that the anger was based on the fact since the Yoruba stopped going to the North to buy beans, the Hausa over there had been sending the foodstuff to their kinsmen in Bodija market.

He said this was what led to the meeting with the police commissioner where it was agreed that the foodstuff coming in should be shared equally between the two groups – which was readily agreed to by the Hausa.

Speaking on the disruption of peace at the market, the Police Public Relations Officer, Olabisi-Okuwobi, said that the Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Indabawa, called for a meeting due to an intelligence report at his disposal that there might likely be crisis in the market.

“Both parties agreed to toe the path of peace, but it seems that the youth in the market heard about the outcome and were not happy with it. They started destroying beans, pepper and other goods in the market.

However, the police commissioner quickly drafted several teams of patrolmen, led by the Area Commander, ACP Peter Okoh, as well as an Armoured Personnel Carrier, to quell the protest,” she stated further.

Commenting on the development and the possibility of a spillover of such violence to Osogbo, the Osun State capital, a top security official said “Osun cannot witness tribal clash or hostility in any form.”

The official, who pleaded anonymity, said “Northerners in this state have been coexisting peacefully with their host communities here, and few days ago, we held a meeting with Hausa and Fulani traders.”

He stressed that “adequate and effective security measures have been put in place to sustain the reigning peace and harmony in all the nooks and crannies of Osun.”

Channels TV thought they would destroy my destiny,it backfired on them-NSCDC’s Shem “Oga at the top” Obafaiye

I love this interview conducted with former Lagos State NSCDC commandant, Shem  Obafaiye(Oga at the Top). For the first time since the famed interview, he tells us how he really felt and why he emerged victorious at the end.Culled from theheraldng.com

What is your opinion about the Channels Television interview that brought you instant fame?
I have nothing much to say other than to bless God for everything. I thank God for all that happened; I thank God for my boss, his support and love. He is a good boss and I appreciate him. As far as I am concerned all things work well for those who love God and in all things, the Bible says we should praise God.
The people that thought they were going to ruin me did not know that they would end up in announcing my destiny. In the history of humanity, there had never been any human being that had instant fame like I did especially in a case that was meant to end negatively.

My brother-in-law in London is even so excited about the incident that he promised to assist me make big money out of this supposed mess. He had already handed the matter to an agency over there to trade mark “Oga at the Top.” But I just asked him to forget it. There is no need for that.
Many of my class mates are in top positions in Nigeria currently, yet, they said I did not go to school. I can mention a lot of them here, including the AttorneyGeneral in Lagos State, Ipaye.
But why should I do all that. All the same, I give all the praises to God. It was not the first interview I would be having with them (Channels Tv). After that interview we shook hands and I even gave them my complimentary card. I could see that they were not really cheerful. If there was any effect, it was on them and not me. It was the same day I met with Governor Fashola of Lagos State.
Theirs took place in the morning and I met Governor Fashola later in the day. Some people believed they were up to something, but I did not know. I was only being careful with words as a security officer. We apply caution in all that we say and do. It was a live programme, the whole world was watching us, so, I did not want to be too free.
But like I said, I thank God for everything. I blame nobody for anything; I see everything as an act of God. They believe they would use it to destroy my destiny but God turned everything around for me, for the better.
How did your family take the development?
The day of the interview, 16th of March, 2013, was the day my father was buried. It was as if it was designed to destablise me on the day of the burial of my father, but it was not so. It was three or four days after that they apologised and said it was not meant to embarrass me.
Channels felt bad because it backfired. Anybody that wants to go for an interview in Channels will be very skeptical now and henceforth. I just felt it was my time for divine announcement, so I did not take it the way they thought I would take it.
In fact, when I saw the T-shirt, I wanted to buy one. Some had thought that my transfer to Ibadan was a demotion, but they are wrong. It is not. They also claimed that my wife went to Channels over the issue. The question I asked was, to do what? She did not. The whole thing has only turned around to be God’s glory in my life.
What is your philosophy of life and how did it apply in the case of “My Oga At The Top” case?
My philosophy of life is to impact positively on this generation. I want to leave a legacy, a good and worthwhile legacy behind that will not make my family live or walk in fear when I am gone. I want to sustain my good name; and that is what I preach to my staff every day.
I tell them to be open-minded; be determined; do what you will do with your best ability whether people are there or not. Note that there are people watching you and your work will speak for you when you are not there. This is what I always tell them.

"I'm very stylish..I have over 30 expensive studs"-Kcee

How many Jesus piece chains do you have?

I have just one and it is very precious to me. I got it in Spain when I went there to shoot the video for my new song, Okoso. I can trade it for moneyanytime. It is like saving my money. I got it but it was quite expensive. I will not say the price so that I won’t be attacked. I have been robbed several times. I’ll not want to expose myself any more.
What is that fashion item you cannot leave home without?

I can’t leave home without my earring (studs) for both ears. I don’t know why, but that is something I cannot leave home without. I don’t joke with it. I wouldn’t want to mention how much it costs. I don’t like mentioning figures but they are pretty expensive. Why I love them so much I don’t know. Even if you come to my house in the morning, I would put my studs on first before I come downstairs to see you. I have over thirty of them.
 What influences your style?
The truth is, I am a very stylish person and I have always had it in my blood. It is something I love. It reflects in my life, video, apartment and even my car. Everything about me is fashion, so anytime I do anything, I don’t get prepared; I do it because it is a part of me.
What is the craziest thing a lady has done to you?
A few days back in Abuja, I saw a girl and she opened her hand, I saw my name tattooed on it. I don’t know her, I saw her during a show some days back. She was like this is KCee. She said that she did it and had been looking for a way to show it to me. I was surprised. I went mad, I was excited, I felt loved. I took pictures with her. Outside the country, I have been taken care of by female fans. Some of them are surprised it is me. They tell me they have a car, home, they want to take care of me. It feels good when people show you love because of what you do.

Is Boko Haram Leader Really Dead?

How JTF Reached Conclusion That Shekau Is Dead

20 August, 2013
Politics
A Security Consultant, Captain Umar Ali (Rtd) has disclosed the timeline used by the Joint Task Force (JTF) in concluding that the Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau, is killed. He has revealed this information today at a Channels Television program. Confirming the possibility of the sect leader death, he still said that “there would be room of doubt” on the part of the people.
The JTF in Borno State, Operation Restore Order, reported yesterday Abubakar Shekau might have died as a result of injuries sustained during a recent military onslaught on his group, but this hypothesis is yet do be tested. The verification process is the possible explanation for the time lag before the information was released, Captain Ali said.
He further explained that information is passed through the 'intelligence cycle' before it is released. Besides, the JTF used ‘social indicators’ to confirm their speculations.
“After the Sambisa attack, we saw a kind of withdrawal. We saw the terrorists’ attacks abating greatly. There was virtually a lull before Kano came up. And added to that (based on information and follow up I’ve done) in camps that were raided, things were discovered that gave the impression that these people left here in a hurry. A lot of things were abandoned and they moved. Those they couldn’t go with, they burnt outrightly, themselves. So it’s possible that the leader was injured and they had to abandon ship. And they crossed over to Amitchide and tried to patch him up but he did not survive,” Captain explained the possible order of events.
Captain Ali also said the Borno mosque attack could have been retaliation for the loss.
He then said that the current situation poses opportunities for all the 'stakeholders' - the Boko Haram sect, law enforcement agencies and the government, and urged the government and security agencies to move from dynamic and military counter-terrorism strategies towards anti-terrorism ‘more democratic’ in nature. This process would involve awareness raising, information and the option of ‘judicial trial’ for captured terrorists.
Mr. Sagir Musa, the JTF spokesman, yesterday, in August 19, stated that Shekau has possibly “died of gunshot wound received in an encounter with the JTF troops in one of their camps at Sambisa Forest on 30 June 2013”.

Snake Festival in India

Hundreds of people queued in a remote village in eastern India over the weekend to receive blessings from metres-long and potentially deadly snakes, thought to bring them good luck.

Snake charmers clapped and beat colourful drums to lure their“prized catches”out of wicker baskets and clay pots, as part of an annual festival in the village of Purba Bishnupur in West Bengal state.

“It is an art to make the snakes come out of their boxes and baskets,”Hyder Mal, a 46-year-old snake charmer taking part in the festival told AFP on Saturday.

An Indian snake charmer performs with a‘gokhra’–cobra–in his mouth for passers by

The snakes, considered by the locals as incarnations of the Hindu snake goddess Manasa, swayed to the rhythm and motion of their handlers as the villagers drew closer.

Every year, people from the area gather in the green village some 85 kilometres (52 miles) from the state capital Kolkata, to honour and pray to Manasa.

The goddess is believed to bring good luck ahead of the harvest season and also ward off troubles in this mainly agricultural belt.
Mal, a father of six, appears at ease as he handles a long golden-brown cobra while urging the crowd gathered around to donate freely.

“Business has gone down for us. People want to take blessings from the snakes but are stingy when it comes to paying up,”he complained.

Mal, who owns six large serpents, reminisces of the time when business was roaring, mainly because of the demand for venom used to treat snake bites.

“Now we are living a life of penury. Synthetic venom is what is used now. The government does not care about us,”said Mal.

“I wouldn’t want any of my children to carry on with our family tradition,”he added.

Charmers have long been a favourite with tourists in India. But their numbers dwindled after the government strengthened laws in 2002 proscribing the commercial use of wild animals, including performances with live snakes.

The legislation emptied most cities of charmers, although they can still be found in rural areas, and also around major tourist sites, risking arrest as they try to cajole visitors into taking a photo for a small fee.

Animal rights activists accuse snake charmers of cruelly capturing the serpents in suffocating bags and yanking their teeth out or sewing their mouths shut so that they don’t bite.

Mal and other snake charmers were quick to refute the charges.

“For us snakes are gods. We worship snakes, we would never want them to suffer,”said a 60-year-old charmer, who did not want to be identified.

New SAmsung Phone

Samsung Electronics Co. will introduce a wristwatch-like device named the Galaxy Gear next month that can make phone calls, surf the Web and handle e-mails, according to two people familiar with the matter. The Galaxy Gear will be powered by Google Inc. (GOOG)’s Android operating system and go on sale this year to beat a potentially competing product from Apple Inc. (AAPL), the people said. The device will be unveiled Sept. 4, two days before the IFA consumer electronics show begins in Berlin, one of the people said, asking not to be identified because the plans are private.

Asia’s biggest technology company is racing other electronics makers, including Sony Corp. , to create a new industry of wearable devices as the market for top-end handsets nears saturation. The global watch industry will generate more than $60 billion in sales this year, and the first companies to sell devices that multitask could lock customers into their platform, boosting sales of smartphones, tablets and TVs.

“It will carve a niche for sure as this is an initial product in the market,” said Chung Chang Won, an analyst at Nomura Holdings Inc. in Seoul. “Wearable devices could be one of the trends in the smartphone market, but I’m not sure yet whether watches or glasses will set the trend.”

The Galaxy Gear being released next month won’t have a flexible display, though the company is continuing to work on developing a bendable screen, one person said. It will be unveiled the same day as Samsung’s Galaxy Note 3, a combination smartphone and tablet computer.

Apple had a team of about 100 designers working on watch-like device, two people familiar with the matter said in February. The Cupertino, California-based company is seeking to introduce its device this year, one of the people familiar said at the time.Samsung became the world’s largest smartphone maker last year, overtaking Apple.

The Suwon, South Korea-based company had about 33 percent of the global smartphone market in the second quarter, while the iPhone maker fell to a three-year low as more consumers chose inexpensive handsets from Chinese makers, according to researcher Strategy Analytics.Samsung posted second-quarter earnings July 26 that missed analyst estimates as sales growth for the flagship Galaxy S4 was curbed by slowing demand for high-end handsets.

Do people really HOLD RAIN?

Recently, I've heard people use the word 'the rain is been held'. I actually do wonder, just how possible is it? I tot we were done believing 'superstitious' things but this suprisingly is still believed. So to y'all that believes it, I'd like to ask, HOW EXACTLY IS RAIN HELD. Is there a scientific backing to this theory?

POEMS written by AKPOS and his WIFE and his wife to him!

WIFE: I wrote your name on sand it got washed. I wrote your name in air, it was blown away. Then I wrote your name on my heart & I got Heart Attack.

AKPOS: God saw me hungry, he created pizza. He saw me thirsty, He created Pepsi. He saw me in darkness, He created light. He saw me without problems, He created YOU.

WIFE:.. Twinkle twinkle little star You should know what you are. And once you know what you are, Mental hospital is not so far.

AKPOS: The rain makes all things beautiful. The grass and flowers too. If rain makes all things beautiful Why doesn't it rain on you..?

WIFE: Roses are red; Violets are blue. Monkeys like u should be kept in ZOO. Don't feel so angry you will find me there too Not in cage but laughing at YOU

WHO KILLED IT? The wife or Akpos?

Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau, may have died of gunshot wounds – JTF

The JTF said the latest video by Shekau may have been staged.

The Joint Task Force, Operation Restore Order, in Maiduguri, Borno State said intelligence report available to it “revealed that Abubakur Shekau, the most dreaded and wanted Boko Haram Terrorists leader may have died”.

The JTF in a statement by its spokesperson, Sagir Musa, on Monday said Mr. Shekau “died of gunshot wound received in an encounter with the JTF troops in one of their camps at Sambisa Forest on 30 June 2013.”

According to the statement, “Shekau was mortally wounded in the encounter and was sneaked into Amitchide – a border community in Cameroun for treatment which he never recovered.”

“It is greatly believed that Shekau might have died between 25 July to 3 August, 2013. He was reported to have masterminded the kidnap of the seven French citizens and that of the elder statesman Alhaji (Dr) Shettima Ali Monguno in addition to many murders of Islamic clerics in Northern Nigeria.

“He was also responsible for bombings of many places of worship and public buildings including Police and United Nations Headquarters in Abuja,” the statement said.

It also said the recent video released on 13 August, 20013 by the purported sect leader was “dramatized by an imposter to hoodwink the sect members to continue with the terrorism and to deceive the undiscerning minds”.

“The JTF wishes to appeal to the sect members to lay down their arms and embrace the Federal Government’s offer for dialogue,” the statement added.

ASUU

The end to the present strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) may be in sight as President Goodluck Jonathan has approved N400 billion for the infrastructural development of Nigerian universities.
The document to this effect is expected to be made available today at the meeting of the presidential committee on implementation of the NEEDS assessment in the universities withthe leaders of the four university-based unions – the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU), the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
The President of SSANU, Samson Ugwoke, made the revelation while addressing his union members at the SSANU National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held at the weekend at the University of Abuja.
Ugwoke, briefing the SSANU members on the activities of the NEEDS assesment implementation committee, led by Benue State Governor, Gabriel Suswam. He noted that the fund was different from the N100 billion Governor Suswam had raised from donor agencies and big companies to tackle the problems of Nigerian universities in 2013.
The labour leader said: “Let me give you a tip on what the NEEDS assessment committee is doing. The president has approved that within the next four years; N400 billion would be expended in infrastructural development of Nigerian universities, to transform the universities to international standard.
“N100 billion has already been raised by Suswam committee out of which 61 universities have been pencilled down, as contained in the NEEDS assessement committee. The N100 billion is expected to address needs of the universities in the areaswhich include re-furbishing and renovation of lecture theatres and lecture halls, re-furbishing and renovation of laboratories/libraries and the renovation of hostels.
“The second category is building of new hostels of international standard, self-contained rooms, the latest model in the world. That is the standard to be built in every university, and also the state-of-the-art laboratories as well as classrooms, lecture theatres and the halls.”
Ugwoke pointed out that the money had been shared and out of the N100 billion, N96 billion had been sent to universities.
He added: “The committee is meeting again on Monday, and by Monday (today), the document will be out. This time around, it is not only by giving university money, but it willbe monitored to ensure that the money is used to transform the universities, to bail universities out of the present situation and developed to an international recognized university standard.” source http://sunnewsonline.com/new/cover/ASUU-strike-jonathan-approves-n400bn-lifeline-ssanu/

BBA Palaba

The love tempo in the Big Brother Africa house is bound to change drastically, Olokunbolablessing.blogspot.Com observed, as Beverly Osu's in-house lover, Angelo, has been evicted from the reality show.
Angelo's eviction happened on Sunday and Beverly cried out her eyes. While she was sobbing, Melvin who is Naija's second representatives but always quiet in the BBA house, went to Beverly Osu's bed to console her and gave her a sweet message. Below is what he told her:

"You still have me. You will be fine. I will still be here for you. My bed is the biggest in the House. You can share it with me."

Since Angelo will be going back to South Africa to be with his real girlfriend, do not be surprise if tomorrow you see Beverly in the hands of this cute guy, Melvin. It seems she really need a man. *laughs*

Why Africa May Never Produce A Facebook, Groupon, Zynga Or Google

http://www.forbes.com/sites/mfonobongnsehe/2011/04/07/why-africa-may-never-produce-a-facebook-groupon-zynga-or-google/

This was the title of a post by an african reporter on Forbes Africa. As I read the post I couldn't disagree with the writers point.

But I still refused to believe africa can't or doesn't have the capability to produce $billion Internet companies.

More even now am interested in knowing or finding out about the ground breaking ideas out there. Because I believe before funding there must be ground shaking ideas and innovations. The writer did make mention of a few but (I stand to be corrected that) we still lack a lot.

So my thought and question has been rephrased from the reporter's.

Where are all Nigeria's programmers and developers?

If not even web apps, Where are the new android and iOs apps? Why don't we have them crawling all over the place?

The mobile platforms are speedingly taken over. Plus from my little research and understanding the cost/effort to produce these apps have greatly been reduced by there inventors.

Sure, We have produced the likes of jobberman and Iroko yet one can still say these are not industry disruptive companies.

Finally, Someone might ask "why haven't I produced mine?" Well I have always enjoyed been on the non-tech (idea guy) side of the game. But we all know many tech guyz in nigeria aren't ready to grow startups (I stand to be corrected again). They do would rather aim for jobs with the oil companies. Have got 1st hand experience on this myself even with some NL programmers. So recently have decided to jump in and start building programming skills. Cos I really really just hate this Article Title!

Now fellow geeks let's hear your thoughts...

Rivers Govt Officials Shun Chief-Justice’s Valedictory Ceremonies

THE Rivers State government officials Monday shunned the valedictory ceremonies in honour of retiring Chief Judge, Justice Ichechi Nwenenda Ndu.

At the event, Justice Ndu noted that the judiciary is facing a perilous time ahead of 2015 and has urged judges to remain fearless.

Top state government officials, including Governor Chibuike Amaechi, his Deputy, Tele Ikuru, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Worgu Boms, Speaker of the House of Assembly and others were conspicuously absent at both the church service and court session held respectively in honour of the retiring CJ in Port Harcourt yesterday.

The absence of state officials might not be unconnected with the political crisis rocking the state since April and the politics of appointment of the acting Chief Judge, Justice Daisy Okocha.

During the valedictory court session held at the conference hall of the state judiciary, the moderator of the ceremony skipped the address that ought to have been delivered by the Attorney General and the goodwill message by Governor Amaechi. Both officials who were listed on the programme of event did not send representatives.

An official at the Government House in Port Harcourt told The Guardian that he was not sure if the judiciary had invited the government officials.

Those present at the ceremonies were the Minister of Youth Development, Inuwa Abdulkadir, Minister of State for Education, Nyesom Wike and the Chief Judge of Anambra State. Others are representatives of the Chief Judges of Bayelsa, Delta, Abia, Akwa Ibom, Enugu and Cross River states.

Justice Ndu observed that ahead of 2015, the courts across the country are already inundated with political matters. Describing the times are perilous, he cautioned judges against granting ridiculous exparte motion which are aimed at an applicant springing surprises on a respondent.

He noted that the country has experienced 14 years of uninterrupted democratic governance, “regrettably, the impunity of those in authority has continued to increase.” He therefore urged judges to rise to the occasion and do justice to all especially the downtrodden who are likely victims of abuse of power.

Justice Ndu implored his colleagues to imbibe the spirit of judicial activism in a bid to curb the excesses and impunity of those in government, reminding them that courts are naturally not expected to do the bidding of those in power.

He lauded Amaechi for ensuring the independence of the judiciary and prompt release of financial allocations that enabled him to accomplish most of the capital projects executed during his 12-year reign.

On his part, the President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mr. Okey Wali (SAN) said appointment of judges should be based on intellectual acumen and professional competence rather than political consideration, which is responsible for corruption of the justice system.

Wali lamented that judicial appointments are now getting politicised irrespective of the salient fact that the duties of judges are sacred and such should be insulated from political considerations. According to him, political inference in judicial appointments remains one of the reasons for corruption in the justice system.

He stressed that while corruption can be tolerated in, for instance, the executive arm of government, this social menace remains antithetical to judiciary which has the divine power of life and death.

He explained that it was in recognition of the fact that corruption has become a cankerworm in the judiciary that the NBA has decided to work in collaboration with the Chief Justice of Nigeria to rid both the Bench and the Bar of corrupt persons. According to him, about six lawyers have been debarred.

Speaking on behalf of the Body of Senior Advocates of Nigeria, Ifedayo Adedipe (SAN), described judiciary as a stabilising factor in Nigeria. He noted that while other arms of government create a mess in the system, they have always expected the judiciary to clear it up.

He decried the seeming high handed of the Judicial Service Commission for recently suspending a judge without pay for one year.
